1 August 2025, India’s digital payment system, including UPI-linked apps, Google Pay, Phone Pay, Paytm, and BHIM, underwent significant changes with new UPI and banking regulations introduced by the NPCI. The primary focus of the changes is to decrease server strain, curb fraudulent activities, and improve user experience. Given that UPI transactions exceed 12 billion per month, a more robust and efficient system is needed.
Balance Checks and AutoPay Now Regulated
Users can check their balance 50 times per day on a per app basis. UPI apps will now show balance post-transaction, streamlining the process. AutoPay, used in recurring payments and EMIs, will now execute during low traffic times, specifically 10 AM, 1 PM to 5 PM, and post 9:30 PM.
Account Access and Transaction Status Limits
For security reasons, users can now view their linked bank accounts 25 times a day per app. Transaction status inquiries have been restricted to three trials with an enforced 90-second wait between attempts. The changes also assist in reducing background traffic and system speed enhancement during peak periods.
Recipient Verification and Compliance Penalties
There is an improvement in verifying details with the use of the transaction ID and the user’s name, which precede every transaction. NPCI has UPI complaints and failure to resolve the issues will lead to firm penalties such as API restrictions, financial fines, or a halt in new customer onboarding.
New UPI Rules vs Old System
Feature | Before August 2025 | After August 2025 |

Final Verdict
There will be 2025 changes regarding UPI and banking policies which will enhance method and fraud monitoring along with increasing security standards. Users may have to adapt to new ways of doing things, but the benefits will outweigh the changes.
